Shopping in Amritsar

There are many places to shop in Amritsar, Punjab. The
market places buzz with activity and people flock in the
markets right from 10:00 Am till 9:00 PM. |

The main shopping areas in Amritsar are, Katra Jaimal Singh,
Hall Bazar, Queens Road and Lawrence Road. Malls are also
started in Amritsar in the Mall Road area, the market around
the Golden temple sells mostly religious stuff and
literatures. |

Amritsar is famous for woolens, carpets ,shawls, sweaters
and blankets, Ladies Suits , Punjabi jutti (Punjabi Leather
Shoe) and embroidered stuff.
The clothes in fulkaari work is the speciality and are also
seen hanging in the showcases of the shops.
Foodstuff, especially spices are a must pick, Amritsari
Paper and Warian are very special. |

Nightlife in Amritsar can be well spent by visiting Golden
Temple. Sitting by the Sarovar during the evening till the

Always carry basic medical kit with your luggage. Also carry
adequate quinine, the anti-malarial drug.

If you are travelling in summers (April-August), carry only
cotton garments, shorts, light coloured clothing. In Winter
season (October-February) woollen clothing is must as the
temperature often touches zero levels or below that.

Don’t Carry much cash with you , carry traveller's cheques
and get them converted when needed with through authorized
travel agents.

Do book your Hotel and Cab in Advance to avoid been cheated
by local touts.

Don’t use cabs without Tourist Licence Plate (White color
Registration Plate) they are illegal cabs; use only Yellow
Licence Plate Cabs for your safe holidays.

When you visit a Gurudwara particularly, make sure you leave
your footwear out and cover your head properly with a piece
of cloth. Respect the religious feelings.

Before shooting pictures of a Gurudwara, a historical
monument, museum or a palace, ensure beforehand if
Photography is not prohibited.

If you are not conversant in the local dialect and you are
using public transport like cabs or auto rickshaws for
internal commuting, make sure you ask a few people around
before you get into one. Do find out the fare before you
agree on a price with the driver to avoid being cheated
